Some ski resorts in the Sierra are staying open all the way until May. But for one resort, it's time to say goodbye for now. Many people hit the slopes for closing day at Sugar Bowl on Sunday.
For first-timer Teigue Wakefield from Loomis, it was a rough day with lots of falling. But her friend encouraged her, saying it's all part of the "learning process."
For others like Shelby Bonke from Crescent City, skiing goes hand in hand with growing up. She's been skiing since she was 4.
Kids like Harry Pullen live up in the mountains. His dad, Nick, says he skiis every weekend.
June Atkinson from Grass Valley has been meeting up with friends-turned-family up in the Sierra for more than twenty years. This year's closing celebration at Sugar Bowl includes taco, beer, and music. The group only skiied about seven runs, less than usual.
"We're just here to say goodbye today," explained Atkinson. "This is the end of the season. These are our people. We all go in different directions in the summer, so here we are."
The Lucchesi kids, Jake, 10, and Jessa, 6, are from Auburn. They've been skiing since before they can remember. They have one goal for the day: to shut it down.
Squaw Valley closes on April 25th. Mammoth Ski Resort is open until May 29th.
