'Just doing our part': Yuba City organization feeds Sacramento's unhoused on Christmas Eve

Seva Selfless Service provided clothing, hygiene products, and food to seven hundred people on Christmas Eve.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As many are enjoying meals with families, there are still those without a home or a warm meal during this holiday season. Seva Selfless Service hopes to change that.

Sharetta Mayers is one of hundreds who lined up in Sacramento Sunday to get the bare necessities like clothing and food, and she's thankful for it.

"Oh my gosh, it reminds me to pay it forward," she said.

Mayers has been without stable housing for the few years and she's trying to stay positive.

"I don't really look at it as negative because I'm in this situation and we are community, we help each other," Mayers said.

Sunday's help came from Seva Selfless Service, a Sikh organization based out of Yuba City, with a mission to serve communities in need.

"We have donations that come in. Socks, beanies, blankets. We ordered tarps this year, just for these individuals to use and so we're giving all that out as well as a warm meal, along with snacks and drinks today," said volunteer Pavan Parmar.

The team has come to Sacramento during the holidays for the last 12 years to hold a winter gear drive. They made no exceptions, even on Christmas Eve.

"It's at the core of our organization to be able to give back, not only to individuals that need it here, but communities all around. We're just doing our part, we're here trying to make a difference," Parmar said.

On a weekly basis they serve around 400 people, but on a day like Christmas Eve, they're expecting 700.

"Everyone is struggling at this time," Parmar said. "We continue to selflessly serve and it's important for us to continue to do that no matter what the situation is."

The mission to selflessly serve has inspired Mayers to do the same.

"Hopeful and to always give back. Remember where I started, remember I came from. This is just my community, where I have to come and help. I believe I'm going to this for a reason," Mayers said.

Although her living situation isn't ideal, she has high hopes for next year.

"Life happens and I'm just building my foundation. Keeping hope and positivity," she said.

Seva Selfless Service is actively seeking donations.
