BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Four people are dead, and nine others hospitalized following a shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. This is what we know so far about the shooting.

When did the shooting happen?

The shooting occurred on Wednesday morning. Law enforcement responded to reports of an active shooter at 10:23 a.m., according to a release from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office. The situation unfolded rapidly, with multiple agencies arriving on the scene to manage the emergency and begin the investigation.

How many are hurt and who are the victims?

In the latest latest update from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, two teachers and two students died from their injuries. Nine others were taken to the hospital to be treated.

The victims were identified by the GBI as:

  • Teacher Richard Aspinwall, 39
  • Teacher Christina Irimie, 53
  • Student Mason Schermerhorn, 14
  • Student Christian Angulo, 14

The shooting also left nine others hospitalized, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Eight of those injured were students, and one was a teacher.

Who is the suspect? Are they in custody?

The GBI identified the accused suspect as 14-year-old Colt Gray. Gray was taken into custody and booked into the Gainesville Detention Center on Thursday.

The agency said the young teen was a student at Apalachee High School. He has been charged with murder, and he will be tried as an adult.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said that Gray was actually investigated in 2023 by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office after Gray allegedly posted online threats containing photos of guns in a threat to commit a school shooting. The time and location were unknown.

Gray was 13 years old at the time. At the time, the father said that though he had hunting guns in the house, his son did not have "unsupervised access" to them. The boy also denied making the online threats.
