While tracking a vehicle near a North Sacramento La Qunita hotel, the situation quickly turned into the exchange of gun fire between a California Highway Patrol officer and the driver of that vehicle.

While the vehicle was still in the hotel parking lot, CHP auto theft task force officers began pulling up behind the car when it suddenly shifted into reverse, driving at officers at a high rate of speed, CHP officials said.

The officer reacted by firing one shot, according to officials. The car then drove away and was later found abandoned near Madison and Date avenues.

According to CHP, the man ran off, losing one of his shoes in the process. Additional shots were fired by the man, prompting the officer to fire back, CHP said.

No injuries were reported. The man was arrested later Thursday afternoon.
