SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A woman is dead and a man is injured after a crash early Sunday in south Sacramento.
Just before 4 a.m., three vehicles were involved in the collision on southbound Interstate 5 between Meadowview Road and Laguna Boulevard leaving one woman dead and a man, her passenger, with major injuries, according to California Highway Patrol South Sacramento spokesman Officer Mark Leavitt.
The crash's cause is under investigation as well as if a driver was under the influence, Leavitt said.
Just after 5 a.m., the Sacramento Fire Department posted an advisory to X, formerly Twitter, saying traffic was at a standstill due to the fatal crash. Around 8 a.m., lanes were clear.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Battalion Chief Keith Wade, a fire department spokesman.
The department responded to the crash. Upon arrival, Wade said first responders found one vehicle flipped in the roadway, torn apart pretty severely. It was clear the vehicle had flipped multiple times, Wade said. Another vehicle involved in the crash was located upright off the freeway in a field; it appeared not to have flipped.
Wade said what occurred was likely a high-speed collision, but its cause and other details will be determined by CHP.
