SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Luther Burbank High School in South Sacramento is undergoing several renovations and improvements to give students and faculty more amenities.
New facilities added to the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) campus over the past year include:
- New pool and pool area
- New PE hallway and locker rooms
- New floors, electrical and paint in rooms B-H
- Exterior of the school painted by students and community members
It's part of a years-long effort to modernize the school initially built in the 1960s, with architects brought on to take advantage of its current features, according to Mayra Tellez, SCUSD communications coordinator for Luther Burbank High School.
"There's been ongoing improvements in the school for five years now that started with the science wing, before that it was the stadium," she said. "That's kind of what set it off."
The baseball and softball field in the southwest corner of the campus are currently under construction and tennis courts will be moved to this west side of campus to have a centralized sports complex, Tellez said.
Inside the classrooms, more electrical outlets were added and architects are working on improving lighting.
"We completely resurfaced the entire concrete over the summer," Tellez said. "It's important for the aesthetics of the school."
