Construction starts on 175 tiny homes in South Sacramento 'Safe Stay' community

Sacramento city officials announced the tiny home sleeping cabins provided by Gov. Gavin Newson are scheduled to be completed in Fall 2024.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Construction began Friday on 175 tiny home sleeping cabins for emergency shelter and services on 6820 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento city officials said.

The South Sacramento 'Safe Stay' community will be run under the Sacramento City-County partnership agreement adopted in 2022.

Gov. Gavin Newsom promised the city of Sacramento in March of last year his administration would deliver 350 tiny homes.

“Sacramento is demonstrating leadership among local jurisdictions in its efforts to provide small homes for Sacramentans in need,” said Newsom. “As the first location to break ground on this project, Sacramento exemplifies the can-do spirit needed to reject the status quo and find innovative ways to get people off the streets and into housing.”

The tiny homes will be run on the site temporarily as property owner WellSpace Health develops a Community Wellness Campus nearby.

Stockton Boulevard will be the third Safe Stay community in Sacramento, including ones on Florin & Power Inn roads and East Parkway. Both emergency shelter sites opened last year.

The now-developing Stockton Boulevard site sat vacant since 2003 until the 13-acre plot was bought by WellSpace Health last year, city officials said.

“We are committed to working with the community as we move forward with this Safe Stay site,” said City Councilmember Eric Guerra, whose district includes the WellSpace campus. “We are working to reduce homelessness in the neighborhood while also increasing safety. Ultimately, this WellSpace Community Wellness Campus will be a vital new resource in South Sacramento, and I’m proud to see this important health partner growing in District 6.”
