Mother of Stagg High student hopeful as search for her son continues in Stockton

As the search for a Stagg High School student last seen in the Calaveras River enters a third day, his mother told ABC10 she has hope.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Search efforts for a 15-year-old Stagg High School student who jumped into the Calaveras River resumed and ended again Friday.

While searches were briefly suspended Thursday night before resuming Friday morning, family members told ABC10 it's felt like an around-the-clock effort.

"I hope if he is in (the river) he's recovered, if not we hope somebody gets a phone call in the family saying 'We spoke to him' and we can all just reunite and give him a big ole' hug," said Amanda Martinez, the mother of the missing student.

The search began Wednesday afternoon when Stockton Unified School District officials said four boys were possibly involved in a fight on campus.

Two teens approached by school administrators reportedly took off running and jumped into the water. One of the teens came up but search crews are still looking for the other teen.

Mayra Franco, captain of the SUSD Department of Public Safety, said by the time the school resource officer approached the levee, the students were already at the middle island, meaning they had already crossed the initial waterway.
