4 dead after head-on collision in rural Stanislaus County

CHP says all four were wearing seatbelts at the time of the high-speed crash.

LA GRANGE, Calif. — Four people died Friday after a crash in rural Stanislaus County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Bonds Flat Road and La Grange Road.

CHP says 56-year-old Michael Keith of Stockton was driving his pickup truck north on Bonds Flat Road when he illegally crossed the double yellow centerline to pass another vehicle while going 100 mph.

He collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander going around 45 mph south on Bonds Flat Road.

All occupants of the two vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Bonds Flat Road is your typical mountainous road. There is a lot of curvatures to it, so high speed vehicles in this area, in that specific area, we don't see it too much," said Officer Steve Machado, spokesperson for CHP.

Machado emphasized the importance of being preventative.

"The choices that motorists make while they're traveling on the road, it doesn't always directly affect them, it affects everyone else... there's a reason why there's double yellow lines there, and it's to prevent traffic from crashing into each other," said Machado.

The deceased were identified as 56-year-old Michael Keith of Stockton, 66-year-old Donna Yarnal of Modesto, 65-year-old Cindi Schuchterman of Salida (all three were in Keith’s pickup truck), and the driver of the Highlander, 33-year-old Janelle Hall of La Grange.

CHP says all four were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
