SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A popular international supermarket chain still hasn't opened since announcing over a year ago it was bringing a store to South Sacramento, and it's unclear when it might open.
H Mart, based in New Jersey, announced in June 2023 it planned to open a store at a 58,000-square-foot location on Mack Road. The site used to be occupied by Food Source, which Raley’s closed in March 2020.
The building remains empty, which recently prompted Redditors to ask what's going on.
Planned H Mart at a standstill?
City of Sacramento spokesperson Kelli Trapani told ABC10 in an email “there has been no movement” of the store at this time.
The city last heard H Mart was evaluating construction timelines in light of concurrent Northern California projects and marketplace conditions, Trapani said.
ABC10 called H Mart’s corporate office Wednesday about the planned Sacramento location and were referred to an email. After reaching out through email, ABC10 has not yet received a response from H Mart.
H Mart’s June 2023 announcement
When H Mart made the June 2023 announcement, the company said the planned Sacramento location would house a food hall with authentic and fusion Asian cuisines in addition to groceries.
Currently, the closest H Mart locations to the Sacramento region are in San Francisco and San Jose. H Mart has a total of 17 locations across California, according to its website.
After the announcement, ABC10 reached for more information about the location’s opening date. At the time, representatives said no official opening date was set and would be subject to change due to construction schedule and city permit requirements.
Proposed site plan
In January, seven months after H Mart’s announcement, community members began wondering online about the store’s opening. The building remains vacant with a “H Mart coming soon” sign.
The same month, new details about the store were released, as the company was looking to get their permits approved by the city of Sacramento’s Planning and Design Commission meeting.
The H Mart site plan included the following:
• 32 short-term and 6 long-term bicycle parking spots
• 171 parking spots for vehicles
• Food court vendors including Oh K-Dog and Jaws Topokki
