STOCKTON, Calif. — The 11-year-old girl killed after an SUV full of teenagers crashed into a tree in Stockton Sunday morning has been identified.
The San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office identified her as Queen Norwood, of Stockton.
The Stockton Unified School District confirmed to ABC10 that Norwood was a student at McKinley Elementary.
"We are very sorry to hear about the tragic accident that took place this weekend. Anytime we lose a student, it affects the entire SUSD community. We have counseling and support available for our students and staff. Please join us in wishing the family peace and comfort during this difficult time," said SUSD Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez.
Police say the crash happened in front of St. Mary’s High School on the 5800 block of North El Dorado Street around 7:45 a.m. Sunday.
Police found six minors at the scene:
- An 11-year-old girl (Queen Norwood)
- A 13-year-old girl
- A 13-year-old boy
- A 14-year-old girl
- A 14-year-old girl
- A 15-year-old girl
Police say Norwood died at the hospital from her injuries. The other five minors were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“It is very alarming. These are all very young children, between the ages of 11 and 15, and, unfortunately, one of them succumbed to their injuries. It’s disturbing. It’s very alarming," said Stockton Police Department spokesman Officer Omer Edhah said. "And our message out to the community is be mindful where your children are, be aware of where your car keys are, be mindful of who you give your keys to and just kind of be aware all around — definitely don’t want to end up in a situation like this again.”
It's unclear who was driving at the time of the crash. Police say it doesn’t appear there was an adult in the car. They’re now trying to figure out where the minors were seated in the car when it crashed.
