STOCKTON, Calif. — A suspected DUI driver was pulled from a partially submerged car in a slough near Stockton last week.

The California Highway Patrol said the two officers responded to 911 calls about a car that went across all lanes of southbound Interstate 5, north of Hammer Lane, and off the road, but they weren't able to find it initially. They eventually found the car partially submerged on White Slough.

"Officers Brown and Lee could hear someone inside the vehicle, pounding on the right front window. Officer Brown removed his duty belt and boots, jumped into the slough, and swam towards the vehicle," CHP said on Facebook.

Brown used a baton to break the car's window and rescue the driver. With help from Stockton Fire Department, the driver and Brown were hoisted out of the slough.

After the rescue, police arrested the driver on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and released to the hospital. The incident was reported on June 7 around 10 p.m.
