STOCKTON, Calif. — Workers at an Amazon sorting center in Stockton are being offered opportunities to transfer to a new site as their own facility prepares to close.
The sort center is near Newcastle Road, and operations are expected to end at the end of July.
According to Amazon, the lease at the sorting facility is expiring this year, but for the workers, they'll be able to transfer to different facilities in Stockton, Tracy and Manteca.
“We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees, customers, partners, and drivers. As part of that effort, we may close older sites, enhance existing facilities, or open new sites, and we weigh a variety of factors when deciding where to develop future sites or maintain a presence," said Natalie Banke, spokesperson for Amazon. "In this case, all employees at our Stockton sort center are being offered opportunities to transfer to other facilities nearby, as well as support if they choose not to stay with Amazon.”
While the site might be closing, Amazon is still building in the area. Officials said two new Inbound Cross Dock facilities are expected to open in Stockton in the fall. Workers will have an opportunity to transfer to those facilities as well.
"With the opening of our two in-bound cross dock facilities slated for this year, we will be filling more than 1,000 good, local jobs – increasing our overall job total to more than 5,500 in Stockton," Banke said, in part, in a statement. "We’ll also be better able to serve customers faster in and around San Joaquin County and all of northern California."
