Diocese of Stockton warns Modesto residents of imposters posing as Catholic clergy

The Diocese of Stockton says the imposters have been using the names of legitimate priests to conduct unauthorized sacraments and sacramentals.

STOCKTON, Calif. — The Diocese of Stockton is warning Modesto residents of imposters posing as Catholic clergy.

The Diocese says the imposters have been using the names of legitimate priests from Mexico to conduct unauthorized sacraments and sacramentals such as baptism, confirmation, First Communion and house blessings.

They say the imposters, "charge exorbitant fees for celebrating the sacraments, teaching classes and issuing certificates."

They also allude to the imposters using intimidation tactics such as threatening legal action for defamation.

"The Diocese strongly advises the public not to be deceived by these 'wolves in sheep's clothing,'" they wrote in a press release on Facebook.
