Man who stabbed K-9 dies after being shot by San Joaquin Sheriff's deputy

CALIFORNIA, USA — A man who is accused of stabbing a K-9 died Thursday after being shot by a San Joaquin Sheriff's deputy near Stockton.

According to the San Joaquin Sheriff's Office, around 5 a.m. deputies saw a vehicle parked on the side of the road near Hammer Lane and 99 Frontage Road. They stopped to contact the driver and found the man had a warrant. The man didn't exit the vehicle when asked, according to the sheriff's office.

Around 6 a.m., the driver exited the vehicle with a knife and stabbed a K-9 in the face, according to the sheriff's office. A deputy shot the man.

The driver was taken to a hospital where he later died. His identity has not yet been released. The sheriff's office said the K-9 is expected to be OK and he was taken to a veterinarian.

Detectives are investigating the shooting and the sheriff's office said around 7 a.m. the area is expected to be shut down for several hours.
