STOCKTON, Calif. — A trip to the store turned violent Friday night leaving two Stockton teens hospitalized and police searching for a hit-and-run driver.
According to family members of the victims, three teens were walking home from a grocery store around 10 p.m. along 99 Frontage Road near Inspiration Drive. Stockton Police say a dark-colored sedan hit two of the teens — a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl — before speeding away from the area.
"I'm just not OK with this," said Mary Brownlee-Smith, grandmother of 13-year-old victim Alvin. "I got a call saying that he had been hit by a car, and they're taking him to the county (hospital) and I was there in seven minutes from Hammer Lane."
Instead of getting ready for his last days of school before summer break this weekend, Alvin underwent scans, surgery and blood transfusions..
"My grandson is laying over there in UC Davis," said Brownlee-Smith. "I do not like to see my babies laying up in pain."
The Stockton Police Department said it's trying to get answers in this case, which includes checking if any security cameras caught what happened, but the area is desolate. The nearest street camera is almost a mile away.
"I'm looking for cameras on both ends. I'm looking back at the crime scene," said Brownlee-Smith who went out to the scene to conduct her own investigation Sunday. "If I have to do my own little investigation until the police or the law enforcement get involved then let that be, but they need to hurry up."
With her grandson still in serious condition in a hospital bed and his friend recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, Brownlee-Smith has one thing to be grateful for.
"Thank God, he's still here with us," said Brownlee-Smith. "It could have gone another way. I'm just not OK with this, and I won't be until whoever he is is caught."
