STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton's Mayor Kevin Lincoln has announced a town hall to address public safety in the wake of a shooting that left a Cesar Chavez High School student dead.
The town hall, in partnership with the City of Stockton, the Stockton Unified School District and the Stockton Unified Department of Public Safety, is scheduled for Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
It will be held at the Arnold Rue Community Center at 5758 Lorraine Avenue, Stockton, CA. In a statement, Mayor Lincoln asked city residents to uplift victims and survivors of violent crime.
“Our children deserve better, and our community will continue to come together to protect our children and support one another," the statement said. "No student should be in danger in our city, and the violence and the trauma impacting our children are unacceptable."
The town hall was announced Friday in the wake of a deadly shooting that left 17-year-old Thai Khin dead.
According to police, Khin and a 16-year-old friend were playing basketball at Unity Park around 3 p.m. Wednesday when two suspects tried to rob the Cesar Chavez High School students.
A fight allegedly broke out ending in a shooting that left Khin dead and his friend hurt. Officers are still searching for the suspects involved.
The shooting, steps off the campus of Cesar Chavez High School, marked the city's 20th homicide so far in 2023.
Between January and the end of April in 2022, the city recorded 20 homicides. The last year before 2022 when Stockton reported 20 homicides by the end of April was during the city's deadliest year on record, 2012.
The early in the year increase in homicides comes as the police department deals with a staffing shortage, down nearly 120 officers according to the Stockton Police Officers' Association.
