Person dies after being hit by car in Stockton, suspect arrested | Update

The collision was reported in the area of Pacific Avenue and West Yokuts Avenue around 6:30 p.m.

STOCKTON, Calif. — A person has died after they were hit by a car in Stockton Thursday evening.

Stockton police responded to a reported collision between a car and a pedestrian in the area of Pacific Avenue and West Yokuts Avenue around 6:30 p.m.

Police said the person was hit near the sidewalk area on the west side of the street near the Delta College marquee sign. But the driver left the scene, police said. 

The 23-year-old was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where they later died, police said. Family members identified the victim as Jay Floris.

Delta police department officers found the suspect vehicle nearby and took the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jamaraqui Burks, into custody before taking him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Officials say Burks was cleared from the hospital and has been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

The investigation remains ongoing.
