'They were racist comments': Alameda County firefighter on leave after viral video

The firefighter, who the department is not naming, is on paid administrative leave while the department investigates.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. — A viral video taken near Lodi on Highway 99 after a crash shows the tense moments after an accident involving an off-duty firefighter.

The video was recorded and shared by Vath Touch.

"I was going to get out of my car to exchange our information, but I saw him coming up. He was coming up really fast. He was almost running, so I closed my door, locked my door, and I hit the record button," Touch said.

The man works as a firefighter in Alameda County. He can be seen on the video making racist comments toward Touch.

"Why would he have even brought that up? This is an accident. It didn't even matter. He shouldn't even have to bring any race into it," Touch said.

The firefighter could be heard telling Touch that he doubts he has insurance and that he was probably going to work "some lawn job."

The Alameda County Fire chief apologized for the firefighter's actions, saying it doesn't reflect the department.

"I've seen the video. They were racist comments, and they need to be investigated," said Chief William McDonald.

Touch said he hopes the video serves as a lesson for us all.

The firefighter, who they are not naming, is on paid administrative leave while the department investigates.
