STOCKTON, Calif. — A Stockton man was found guilty of killing his wife in June 2022, according to the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office.
Sergio Torres was found guilty of first-degree murder and an enhancement for using a firearm. Torres was arrested in Nebraska days after shooting and killing Sonia Suarez.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said Suarez was found shot inside a crashed vehicle on June 4. According to the deputies, they found a 47-year-old woman, who was the driver and the only person in the vehicle. She was taken to a hospital where she died.
"In the pursuit of justice, we have confronted the darkness that shrouded the heinous act committed by Sergio Torres," District Attorney Ron Freitas said in a statement. “Today's murder conviction serves as a solemn reminder that domestic violence will be met with the full force of the law. We stand undaunted in our commitment to protect the vulnerable and seek justice for the victims who have suffered in silence."
Torres is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 5, 2024.
