STOCKTON - It certainly didn't take long for the shine of a successful election night to wear off for soon-to-be Stockton City Council member Christina Fugazi.

Fugazi was pulled over last Friday evening by Stockton police officers working as part of a large gang sweep. A police report said Fugazi rolled through stoplights, and when she was pulled over, there was the odor of marijuana coming from her vehicle.

On her Facebook page, Fugazi disputes police comments in that report, writing, "This simply is not true."

She added it was "an honest mistake of the police officer."

Later, Fugazi wrote "we have a very young police department.," And then, "I hope this will become a teachable moment."

The Stockton Police Officers Association, which donated thousands of dollars to the Fugazi campaign, clearly didn't appreciate Fugazi's description of the incident.

On its Facebook page, the union wrote she wasn't elected to "recklessly call into question the integrity and trustworthiness of police officers who's (sp) support during her recent campaign she was only more than happy to accept."

Because police were looking for far more serious targets the night of the sweep, Fugazi and her passenger were allowed to leave . The report said it didn't appear Fugazi was under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

The detectives who pulled her over that night also wouldn't be described as "very young." They've been with the department for seven and 13 years.
