STOCKTON, Calif. — The Stockton Lantern Festival kicked off Friday night, dazzling visitors with its vibrant underwater theme and bright lights, despite a storm that brought heavy rain to Northern California.
The event, now in its second year at the Stockton Ballpark, has attracted large crowds eager to experience its mesmerizing displays of colorful sea creatures and giant lanterns.
This year’s festival takes visitors on an imaginative journey through "Koda’s Journey Through the Magic Ocean."
Featuring over 250 stunning art installations, the event is highlighted by more than 60,000 LED lights, many of which illuminate larger-than-life sea creatures, fish, and mermaids.
“People coming out and enjoying themselves and letting their inner child escape. Creating new memories with your friends, family, and loved ones,” said Jason Perry, general manager of ASM Global Stockton.
Despite the wet weather caused by an atmospheric river, the festival continued as planned, attracting a mix of young and older visitors.
"I’m just happy we are here," said Carlos Gemignani, visited both years. “I was just hoping it was not raining, that is it.”
“It is nice. It brings everything to life; it helps with the mist. It gives it a nice aesthetic vibe,” said Marissa Gonzalez, who also has visited the lantern festival both years. “Looking at all the sea creatures is definitely cool. Seeing everything nice and light up.”
Organizers are hoping to surpass last year's attendance of 45,000, aiming for 65,000 -85,000 the second year.
"It’s a great community event," said Gonzalez.
The Stockton Lantern Festival will run daily through January 19, offering an enchanting experience for all ages. Tickets are available online for those interested in diving into the "Magic Ocean" this holiday season.
