STOCKTON, Calif — Multiple people are in custody after a Stockton police sergeant was shot during a carjacking investigation early Wednesday morning.
Police are now trying to determine if the people in custody are related to the carjacking and subsequent shooting, according to a spokesperson for the department. They were not able to give an exact number.
It all started just after 3 a.m. Wednesday when police were investigating a carjacking and found a vehicle matching the description. A chase began and eventually a person ran away from the car.
The sergeant chasing the person was shot in the chest and shoulder, and was taken to the hospital where he’s listed in stable condition. He is expected to survive.
"It is very brazen to shoot at an officer especially following a pursuit," a spokesperson for the police department said.
Police say the 69-year-old carjacking victim was taken to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries.
The person (or people) wanted in the investigation were in an apartment complex near Kentfield Road and Bianchi Road. The apartment was breached by the San Joaquin County SWAT team just before 1 p.m.
Police say the standoff at the apartment complex has now ended and the scene is being turned over to investigators. They also believe there is not an active threat to the public.
