Stockton utilities and public works still operational despite strike

The strike is set to last from Tuesday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 3.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton's water, sewer, stormwater utilities and other public works activities will still be operational despite a strike, according to the city.

Two of the nine bargaining units, which include Trades and Maintenance and Operations and Maintenance employees, are on strike. The strike is set to last from Tuesday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 3.

"The city supports our employees’ right to strike and we have worked with Local 3 to ensure that sufficient staff are available to maintain our core operations," said the city of Stockton in a statement.

Negotiations Update

Mike De Anda, representative for Stockton’s Operations and Maintenance Unit and the Trades and Maintenance Unit, said about 200 workers will be on the picket lines after being without a contract for five months.

"The city has failed to provide information the union has requested and has threatened to terminate workers if they strike," said De Anda.

The city says it reached a tentative agreement with the two bargaining units in August, but the agreements weren't ratified.

In a statement, the city said it and the Operations and Maintenance unit met with a mediator in August and October. The mediator told the parties Oct. 27 she was ending the mediation without an agreement. The city said it would bargain in good faith and plans to meet with union representatives.
