STOCKTON, Calif. — A body recovered from the Calaveras River is confirmed to be missing Stagg High School student Xavier Martinez, according to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner.

The 15-year-old's body was found Tuesday morning by a civilian diver.

Martinez reportedly jumped into the river after a fight on campus involving four boys, according to Melinda Meza, a spokeswoman for the Stockton Unified School District.

Martinez's family was at the scene Tuesday as officials recovered the body.

“During this difficult time, the district continues to stand in support of the family and all those affected. We will continue to offer any support needed. As SUSD Superintendent and a mother, it is my sincere desire that all involved find peace and comfort,” said Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez.

“As a mother, trustee and community member I stand with the family in hope and peace. We are here to support the many people affected by this,” said SUSD Board President Kennetha Stevens.

The search for Xavier Martinez

The search for Martinez began Wednesday afternoon when Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) officials said four boys were involved in a fight on campus at Stagg High School; two teens approached by school administrators reportedly took off running and jumped into the water.

One of the teens resurfaced but search crews continued looking for the other teen. Sacramento Drowning Accident Rescue Team (DART) volunteers joined the search Sunday.

Family members told ABC10 it's felt like an around-the-clock effort.

"I hope, if he is in (the river), he's recovered. If not, we hope somebody gets a phone call in the family saying, 'We spoke to him,' and we can all just reunite and give him a big ole' hug," said Amanda Martinez, the student’s mother.

SUSD Department of Public Safety Captain Mayra Franco said by the time the school resource officer approached the levee, the students were already at the middle island, meaning they had crossed the initial waterway.
