A woman who was booked into San Joaquin County Jail was found dead in her cell Wednesday evening, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said.

Celestine Allen, 50, was booked on Tuesday for assault with a deadly weapon, Deputy Dave Konecny said.

The following day, Allen was found unresponsive in her cell during the evening inmate checks. Konecny said the custody officers performed lifesaving measures but were unable to save her.

A protocol investigation is underway and is standard procedure with in-custody deaths. Konecny said Allen's cause of death is pending an autopsy and a toxicology test.

No other information about Allen was released. Her booking photo was not available at the time of this post.
