Summer Travel Tips: What to know before flying this summer

Here are some tips to save you time and money before you fly.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A busy summer travel season lies ahead.

The Sacramento International Airport is projecting 1.2 million passengers per month will come through the airport from June to August, which would be a record. It's expecting more than 13 million travelers this year.

Airport spokesperson Scott Johnston says there's new nonstop service from Sacramento starting up. Service to Kona and Kauai starts this month, you can fly nonstop to Detroit starting in July, and you can find seasonal flights to Baltimore between June and September.

With Memorial Day weekend coming up, paired with a busy summer of travel, Johnston says to give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport before your flight.

"Before you come out, check the parking app on our website. We also really encourage you to take a rideshare or have a friend or family member come and bring you to the airport. It's just going to make it that much easier, it drops you right off at the door," said Johnston.

If you're thinking of booking tickets for this summer, travel expert Christie Hudson with Expedia says now’s the time to do it.

"Expedia data says the sweet spot is between 21 and 60 days out from your trip, whether you're going international or going somewhere closer to home, and that’s to save about 15% on airfare," said Hudson.

Hudson says traveling at the start of the week, on a Monday or Tuesday, could save you money. Plus, those are the least busy days to travel.

She says the last week of June into the first week of July is the busiest and priciest time to travel this summer. Hudson says if you wait to travel until mid to late August, you'll likely see better prices.

According to Expedia, some top destinations for this summer include London, Japan and beach destinations in Mexico or the Caribbean. Paris will also be busy thanks to the Olympic games.
