Suspect arrested in viral video of driver ramming police cars

Tempe police say the driver hit two patrol cars when they tried to contact him.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A suspect is in custody after a video of a driver ramming into two Tempe Police Department patrol vehicles went viral. Police identified him as 44-year-old Kevin Johnson.

Officers were called to the area of Scottsdale Road and Playa De Norte Drive Wednesday afternoon for a male driver slumped over the wheel, according to the Tempe Police Department.

When officers approached the vehicle they were able to roll down the window and open the door before the Johnson tried to drive off.

Video shared on social media shows Johnson attempting to leave and hit two patrol vehicles in that effort.

Officers were able to shock Johnson, but he was able to drive off southbound.

Tempe police announced Johnson's arrest Wednesday evening and identified him the following day. He is facing felony charges related to fleeing from and assaulting law enforcement.
