Suspect injured in Yuba City officer-involved shooting

A male suspect was injured in an officer-involved shooting Monday evening in Yuba City, according to the Yuba City Police Department.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., Yuba City police officers were attempting to locate a male subject, 36-year-old Leland Vaca, wanted for a violation of probation. Vaca was seen getting into a grey vehicle on Almond Street before a Yuba City police unit attempted to stop the vehicle, officials said.

Vaca, who is from Yuba City, then fled in the vehicle and a short pursuit ensued as Vaca fired shots at the pursuing officers. The pursuit ended when the vehicle veered into a residence shortly after. Vaca fled on foot from the residence, failing to listen police commands to stop, officials said.

At that point, shots were fired by a Yuba City police officer and a Sutter County deputy. Vaca was hit by the gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition.

The police officer and deputy were not injured in the incident. The officer-involved shooting is now under further investigation.
