SUTTER COUNTY, Calif. — A man accused of falling asleep and leaving a gun on a table with a child in the home was convicted of multiple felony charges in October, officials said Tuesday.
The Sutter County District Attorney's Office said Michael Thomas Marti, 34, was found guilty of negligent storage of a gun, felon in possession of a gun, felon in possession of ammunition and felony child abuse or neglect.
The convictions are connected with a deadly shooting in September 2021. Officials said Marti lived in a home with his live-in girlfriend, her six-year-old son and six-month-old daughter, and kept loaded guns in the home.
According to the district attorney's office, the boy found Marti's loaded gun on a living room table while Marti slept in another room. The boy fired a round from the gun, which hit him in the head and killed him.
Officials said Marti left the state not long afterward and was wanted by police until he ultimately turned himself in around late 2022.
Marti is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 24 and faces up to eight years in prison.
