Sycamore Trail extension project making progress

Phase II includes a pedestrian overcrossing being built over Highway 50.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Progress is being made on Phase II of the Sycamore Trail extension project in West Sacramento. It will connect bicyclists and pedestrians to different parts of the city.

According to the project website, the five-phase project will ultimately run south from Sacramento Avenue and Yolo Street over Highway 50 and the Barge Canal, all the way to the Lake Washington and Jefferson Boulevard intersection.

Phase II includes a pedestrian overcrossing being built over Highway 50. Recently, parts of Highway 50 were closed overnight in West Sacramento as part of the work on the bridge. It will make a connection from Evergreen Avenue near Joey Lopes Park to Westmore Oaks Elementary School.

Ryan Teves is a senior civil engineer for the city of West Sacramento and says the bridge will be for bicyclists and cars only.

“So this is a project that's really focused on making it more walkable and connecting communities through more active transportation such as walking and biking,” said Teves.

Construction on the segment started in May and should wrap up in late June 2024. Teves says all five phases of the project should be finished around 2030.
