SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort gondola could reopen as early as this week after a mechanical issue shut down the lift Jan. 4.
According to Cole Zimmerman, a communications manager for Heavenly Mountain Resort, the lift maintenance team has worked the last few days to repair the gondola.
The mechanical issue is with the bearings, according to Zimmerman. The next step is to replace the bearings and put the gearbox and motor back together, which was disassembled at the top of the gondola. It's expected to take a couple of days to reassemble.
There are two main base areas open for guests, including the California Base and Stagecoach Base.
People staying near the gondola can access free daily shuttles between Heavenly Village and the two open base areas.
The mountain got about 12 feet of snow Saturday night, adding to the skiable acres for the season. The North Bowl and Olympic chairs are open and Zimmerman said they will keep opening chairs and terrain as they are able.
