SONORA, Calif. — Tuolumne County Sheriff Bill Pooley announced his retirement Wednesday.

In a memo sent to news outlets, Pooley says he’s decided to retire after 34 years in law enforcement, 11 of which were spent with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.

“I cannot thank my staff enough for their selflessness and dedication to our great community,” wrote Pooley. “I would also like to thank our residents, community partners and allied agencies for their unwavering support during my tenure as your sheriff. Together, we have overcome challenges, achieved milestones and collaborated to keep our community safe.”

Pooley says he’s developed a succession plan and recommends the county board of supervisors appoint Capt. David Vasquez for the remainder of his term.

His last day in office is Feb. 29, 2024.
