TURLOCK, Calif. — A man is dead after he charged at Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies with a weapon near Turlock on Sunday, deputies said.
Deputies were initially dispatched for a suspicious person report along the 3100 block of North Quincy Road. Citing dispatcher information, deputies said a white man was trespassing and armed with a weapon. It's not clear what weapon the man had.
Deputies arrived to the scene with a K9 officer from the Turlock Police Department for backup and found the armed suspect.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies tried several times to establish a dialogue with the man, brought in multiple less-lethal options and tried to de-escalate the situation. However, officials said the suspect refused to drop the weapon and charged at deputies "without warning" while they were talking to him.
A deputy used his gun and the suspect was taken to a hospital where he ultimately died.
The investigation is ongoing. The Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office will be doing an independent investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office Internal Affairs Unit will also be doing their own administrative review to determine whether agency policies were followed.
