TURLOCK, Calif. — A new Korean corn dog shop opened in Turlock this month, bringing a unique twist on a foodie favorite.
The shop, called Corn'd, is located in University Plaza. The Instagram-worthy quick bites are grabbing the attention of both locals and out-of-towners. Days after the grand opening, lines were still out the door as people flocked to get their hands on the crunchy, fried treats.
"We see it on social media, so I’ve been wanting to try it, especially since it's here in town so that makes it even better," said Ricky Aguilar from Turlock.
These aren't just any corn dogs. Instead of being dipped in a typical cornmeal batter, the beef or cheese dogs are rolled in a yeasted dough and then dipped in your choice of crispy potato cubes or crunchy ramen. They are fried until golden, then go to the saucing station where they're dusted in Hot Cheeto powder or Blue Heat Takis for an extra crunch.
Customers can also choose from several sauces to drizzle over, including sweet chili, garlic aioli, ketchup, mustard, ranch and many more.
Corn'd is the brain child of Romeo Esho who opened the business with several of his childhood friends who he grew up with in Turlock.
"We've been making corndogs for a long time, we've been making all kinds of foods, me and my friends," he said. "Being a local and constantly everyone talking about it, I said, 'You know what? Let's bring some fun to town."
When customers walk in, they'll see a space-themed storefront with astronauts and find items on the menu like their signature "moon sauce."
"The flavors you get out of our food will send your taste buds to the moon," he said.
Corn'd hosted their grand opening on Feb. 13. Esho said the idea has been in the works for a couple of years.
"To us, it's more of creating a place where kids can feel safe, families can come and grab a quick bite to go," Esho said.
He said they are hoping to expand in the future.
