Two movies filming in Sacramento as city becomes bigger hub for films

A blockbuster Warner Brothers movie is starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Over the last two weeks, two movies have been filmed in Sacramento: a blockbuster Warner Brothers movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn and a movie about homelessness featuring Billy Baldwin.

Over the last decade, Sacramento has become a bigger hub for movies.

It gained popularity when the Sacramento Film Commission hosted a tour for directors and producers of Northern California to show off potential sites.

It’s been lights, camera, and action in cities across Northern California.

Outlets are reporting the DiCaprio movie has a working title of the BC Project.

Michelle Mercado and her parents were staking out downtown Stockton, where DiCaprio was spotted filming on Monday outside the San Joaquin County courthouse.

“You rarely see celebrities and actors come here and do movies and shows. It’s pretty rare so it was really amazing,” said Mercado.

Regina Hall was spotted on set Thursday in downtown Sacramento as crowds of people craned their necks for a view.

Last week, Billy Baldwin and Ashanti were in the capital city filming “No Address,” a movie about homelessness.

Location manager Stan Bautista, a location manager,  took a recent tour of the Sacramento hosted by the Sacramento Film Commission and said the city can supply everything his film crew needs.

“We actually have in a crew of 50, 31 local hires, so like 60% are local filmmakers,” said Bautista.

Sally Forcier one of the producers of “No Address” was born and raised in Sacramento.

Excited that Greta Gerwig put the capitol city on the map with the filming of Lady Bird.

Forcier said Gerwig, who put Sacramento on the map with "Lady Bird," has given Sacramento the opportunity to be the hero of a story.

“It inspires our youth, our film makers, to not think that you have to be L.A., you can be right here in Sacramento. If you can dream it and you want to do it, there is a great film community,” said Forcier.

No Address has wrapped filming, but the Warner Brothers Leonardo DiCaprio film continues to film in the area throughout the week.
