Big Boy locomotive tour stopping in Roseville. Here's when and where

In Roseville, the steam locomotive will be on display Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The world's largest operating steam locomotive will be making stops across the United States including in Placer County amid two tours planned for summer and fall.

In all, Big Boy No. 4014 will visit 14 states in 2024, including five states during this summer's "Westward Bound" tour from Wyoming to California.

The "Heartland of America Tour" will take Big Boy No. 4014 across nine other states including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. The tour is set to start in August and end in October.

In Roseville, the steam locomotive will be on display Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13.

On Saturday, the city will have activities at the Vernon Street Town Square between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. including live music, food trucks, Old West performances from the Black Flag Gang, spray ground and a farmer's market with vendors and a kids zone.

The Carnegie Museum in Old Town Roseville will also have an exhibit featuring the history of the Big Boy and a kid's railroad activity.

Only eight of the 25 locomotives built during World War II survived, according to Union Pacific. No. 4014 is the only one in operation.

The locomotive will also make short stops in Colfax and Truckee, though it won't be on display. Here's a list of Big Boy's routes.
