Urban Cow Half Marathon returns for 20th year. Here's what to know about the event

Drivers are urged to use detours for roads in the impacted neighborhoods.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Thousands of runners will descend to the streets of Sacramento for the 20th annual Urban Cow Half Marathon this weekend. 

About 3,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the marathon, which will begin and end at William Land Regional Park. Race time is set to start at 7:30 a.m. and is expected to be completed by 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The event will also include a 5K run that will happen on Saturday that will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will mainly take place in the William Land Park area near the Sacramento Zoo. 

Saturday’s race will start and finish on 18th street near Freeport Boulevard. 

A kids race is set to follow at 10:30 a.m. and will consist of four races based on age. The kids are divided by the following races: quarter mile for ages 6-and-under, half mile for ages 7-to-10, one mile for ages 7-to-10 and one mile for ages 11-to-12. 

Road Closures and Detours

There will be street closures in place, which goes through the Land Park and downtown areas. Roads will be back open as soon as the last runner moves through the course. 

According to race organizers, nearby residents and drivers should expect the following roads to be impacted during the half marathon:

•Riverside Boulevard from The Westin Hotel to 11th Avenue will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

•The intersection of Land Park Drive of Land Park and 13th Avenue will be closed 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nearby residents should use 

For those who must drive during the race and live in the surrounding neighborhoods, organizers recommend using the following detours:

•From 8:20 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nearby residents near Riverside Boulevard and Land Park Drive should use South Land Park to leave the neighborhood.

•From 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sacramento Police officers will direct traffic in the area of  Riverside Boulevard and Sherburn Avenue. Those using this detour will only be allowed to turn left on Riverside and up to Sherburn Avenue.

•From 7:40 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.: Use detour signs toward Vallejo Way, Muir Way, Robertson Avenue, Riverside Boulevard, Teneighth Way and Land Park Drive
