Who was Matthew Bowen? Vacaville police officer is first to die in line of duty

"We lost a tremendous police officer and even better human being in Matthew Bowen."

VACAVILLE, Calif. — Officer Matthew Bowen was identified as the officer killed in the line of duty in Vacaville Thursday morning.

Bowen joined Vacaville Police Department on June 13, 2023.

On the morning of July 11, 2024, Bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was hit by a car. He was taken to a hospital, but he ultimately died from his injuries.

"We lost a tremendous police officer and even better human being in Matthew Bowen," said Police Chief Ian Schmutzler. "Matt was a magnetic personality, someone who always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude, loved his family dearly, loved this community. Because of that, we’re all broken hearted this evening."

Bowen previously served with the Concord Police Department from 2019 to 2023. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, parents and a brother.

"Officer Bowen began his law enforcement career here in Concord in December 2019 and served with distinction.  He was known for his work ethic, solid performance and friendly demeanor.  Officer Bowen was extremely well-liked and respected as member of our department.  He left a lasting impact on all of us who worked with him," Concord Police Department said in a statement.

He's described as a "cherished friend and colleague" even after he left the department.

"We lost a hero today," said Vacaville Mayor John Carli. "He was a beloved officer and, as you heard the chief say, a wonderful human being. Today, we lost one of the very best."

Bowen is the first line of duty death for Vacaville Police Department.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. The driver involved in the collision was taken into custody.

“I am terribly saddened to learn of the death of Officer Bowen, who devoted his life to keeping our community safe,” Sen. Bill Dodd said. “I join all North Bay residents in mourning his loss and extend my heartfelt condolences to Officer Bowen’s family and his law enforcement colleagues.”
