Vape sensors installed in restrooms of Lincoln Unified schools

Officials said the sensors were installed in response to an ongoing trend of Lincoln Unified students vaping on high school campuses.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Some schools in Stockton will have vape sensors inside their restrooms to curb a trend of student vaping.

According to the Lincoln Unified School District, the sensors were recently installed on high school campuses.

"We believe these sensors will help us to curb a rising concern. We hope to raise awareness of the dangers of vaping while discouraging students from partaking in actions that may be harmful to them in the long run. We encourage parents to help us address this issue by talking with their students about the consequences of smoking and vaping," the Lincoln Unified School District said in a statement.

Tyler Heberle, spokesperson for the school district, says the sensors were installed in response to an ongoing trend of students vaping on their high school campuses.

"We intend to keep students safe, help them to make better choices, and to preserve the accessibility and sanctity of all on-campus facilities including bathrooms. The sensors were installed as a way of achieving these goals," he told ABC10.

The sensors work by picking up vapors from things like e-cigarettes. They are silent devices, so the alert will go to administrators without making a sound in the restroom. Students caught leaving the restroom after that alert could face an investigation by administrators.

The discipline itself can range from referral to substance abuse counseling, suspension, detention or expulsion.
