Video: Suspect throws rock through door, steals sculptures from Sacramento art store

The accused burglar was arrested the next day at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 18, less than 24 hours later. But there's still no word on where the sculptures might be.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Last week, an art heist in midtown Sacramento was caught on camera when a man threw a rock through the window of Art University on J Street.

It was a bold and brazen break-in on Oct. 17 just before 7:00pm.

The man in the video, who Sacramento police said is 32-year-old Andrew Schortgen, was seen throwing a piece of concrete through University Art on J Street. He then paced the streets for a full minute before returning.

Cell phone video shows Schortgen throwing another rock that breaks the glass in one of the doors of the building. He can be seen in the store front window where he stole the artwork of Chris Bales.

“I was just really sad because we were having a final group show with all the employees,” Bales said.

This was the last show for University Art; the store is now closed.

“They do sell for about $1,200, but it’s also the fact that they are a part of my life, these sculptures are from four or five years ago and I was hoping to show them again,” Bales said.

The accused burglar was arrested the next day at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 18, less than 24 hours later.  But there's still no word on where the sculptures might be.

However, Bales is hopeful after the community came together to help make the arrest. He thinks the 'Have you seen me' posters will reunite him with his art again.

“I’m so thankful for the response, and people are actually searching for it and giving me information and hopefully we can find out where they are and that they are in one piece, I hope so,” Bales said.

Bales is asking the community to please search around, and if you have any information, call the Sacramento Police Department.
