SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Pilots & Pups is a Sacramento-based organization giving at-risk shelter dogs a second chance at life. The organization helps pay for the plane fuel for pilots willing to help transfer at-risk dogs to less crowded foster homes and shelters.
ABC10's Mark S. Allen was able to get details from Pilots & Pups founder Kelly Benedict on the organization's upcoming 5K run/walk fundraiser, Wags to Witches. The event will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, October 12 at McKinley Park.
HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:
- California shelters are currently in a crisis due to overcrowding, with many shelters having no space left.
"The shelters are all overcrowded here in California," said Benedict. "There are many rescues that actually pull dogs from the shelters and they fly them to either fosters or to other shelters where they have a lesser overcrowding problem." - The pilots involved are volunteers with a passion for pups, with Pilots & Pups covering fuel.
"We have more pilots and the pilots volunteer their time and their airplanes. Pilots and Pups raises money for fuel," Benedict told Mark.
The program also takes dogs of all sizes.
"We can take as many as will fit in the plane just based on payload," she explained. "Big dogs, little dogs. We can just take more small dogs than big dogs." - Individual tickets for Wags to Witches range from $35-75 but ABC10 viewers can get 10% off using promo code "ABC10."
