SACRAMENTO, Calif — After an exceptionally cold and wet storm by May standards this weekend, Northern California is set to be back in the 90s by the end of the week.
Most Northern California communities have yet to hit 90 degrees, although downtown Sacramento got close when it hit 89 degrees April 22. The average first 90 degree day in Sacramento is May 2, so the city is running slightly behind schedule. The latest first 90 degree day in Sacramento since 1990 happened June 5, 2010.
High temperatures in the valley Tuesday will be in the low to mid 70s, a couple degrees warmer than Monday. Temperatures will rise to around 80 Wednesday, which is the average for this time of year.
Much like last week, a north wind event will impact the region again thanks to high pressure to the west and low pressure to the east. Northern California will be squeezed between these two features and the result will be dry, gusty winds, particularly Wednesday afternoon and evening.
A Wind Advisory is in from 11 p.m. Tuesday night through 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Winds of 20-30 mph are expected with gusts up to 45 mph possible. Gusty winds are forecast for the entirety of the region, but the Wind Advisory is only for the western Sacramento Valley. Expect gusts in the 30-35 mph range in the Sacramento area.
Winds will lighten up throughout the day Thursday and temperatures will rise into the upper 80s in the valley. Friday will be the first day of widespread 90 degree valley high temperatures of the year. Temperatures will rise into 80s in the foothills and 60s/70s in the Sierra depending on elevation.
Unlike last week, there is no weekend rain anticipated and temperatures will remain elevated through the weekend and through early next week.
