West Sacramento 'dim sum' restaurant closing after 57 years

King's Restaurant will serve customers its famous dim sum one last time on Sunday.

A popular Chinese restaurant in West Sacramento is closing its doors after nearly six decades of business.

King's Restaurant will serve customers its famous dim sum one last time on Sunday.

King’s has been Jennifer Dong’s second home for 33 years. The longtime employee tells ABC10 she has mixed emotions over the restaurant shutting down.

Dong says she’s looking forward to traveling and spending more time with family, but adds it's bittersweet to see this chapter of her life come to an end.

"Very sad, very sad," said Dong. “Almost like family, almost like family. Everybody miss me, I miss them too."

She says many of the people who walk through the doors are more than just her customers.

Richard and Marie Heltzel said they’ve been enjoying the food at King’s since the 1980’s.

“When our kids were young we first started coming here, and now our grandkids come here so it’s been quite a long time we’ve been coming to King’s,” said Richard.

“We've known Jennifer for more than 30 years and it's kind of sad to contemplate not ever coming back. We've known it was a day that was coming, but it's sad because this place has kind of been like family," added Marie.

Another face customers said they’ll miss is that of owner Chew Hoy Lam’s.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you so much," said Lam, as a customer handed him a red envelope with money inside for good luck.

At 93-years-old, Lam still works 8 hour shifts, 7 days a week, and wakes up at 4:00am every morning. “Too old, old," said Lam when asked why he’d decided to close the restaurant.

Lam says he moved from China to Northern California in 1949.

"I'm coming down here – I like it, I make a family here," said Lam.

After countless hours spent at the restaurant over the last 57 years, the Chinese immigrant says he's finally ready to enjoy retirement.

"Stay home, read the newspaper, watch the tv, exercise," said Lam, describing the things he plans to do during retirement.

King’s Restaurant is located on 1500 W Capitol Ave. The last day of business will be Sunday, October 29th.
