WEST SACRAMENTO, California — After a string of vandalisms in West Sacramento, many of the victims, senior citizens, are fed up with what they say are nightly issues.
Residents at the Rivers Senior Apartments in West Sacramento said, every night, they are scared that a group of vandals will break down their doors or that they will find their car windows smashed in the morning.
For Tanya Kholoeyi, the evidence is a shoe print on her front door.
"They push, push, push my door,” said Kholoeyi, adding that people in the area are scared.
Meanwhile, Ed Olsen said the issues are a nightly occurrence.
“They’re ringing my doorbell at 4 o’clock in the morning. We’ve got kids walking around out here dressed in black completely, heads covered in black, all you can see are their eyes,” said Olsen.
Olsen said the vandals also beat on the fence with sticks, waking up residents, and climb it so often that the paint has rubbed off.
There have been so many incidents that apartment management sent out a notice to residents. It said in part:
“Due to recent vehicle vandalizing on the property, we are encouraging residents to remove all items in vehicles. West Sacramento Police Department and Rivers Management are aware.”
West Sacramento police said they got 10 calls about the complex in one week. Two reports were filed complaining of vandalism. One of those reports came from Rosetta Marxs.
“This happened to me three times. I’ve spent $500 on windshields, and this is low-income senior housing. There is a reason why I live here,” said Marxs.
While this is a gated community, one side remains open and residents said they are told by the city that a gate could not be placed there.
“We need cameras in the carport and a deterrent. It’s like an open invitation, 'Come on in, steal from us,'” said Marxs.
The complex has a security patrol, but residents would like to see more of them.
West Sacramento police issueed a citation to a teenager last week for vandalism in the complex. That minor was released back to their parents, but police said this is still an active investigation.
