West Sacramento fire truck drives over 2 people in brush fire response

1 person is dead, another is injured after a fire truck drove over them near a brush fire on Jefferson Boulevard.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A death investigation launched Friday after a fire truck drove over two people during response to a brush fire Friday morning in West Sacramento.

At 11 a.m., crews were called to reports of fire burning along the railroad tracks on the Jefferson Boulevard, according to the West Sacramento Police Department.

Crews arrived to the fire in a fire truck and a wildland engine, also known as a brush rig. Police said a firefighter "spotter" was guiding the brush rig through a debris-strewn area. While the brush rig was driving on a dirt trail, it drove over a carpet where a male and a female were later found inside.

Police believe the incident led to the death of the male and injuries for the female. Their identifies are not being released until their family is notified, police said.

The male's body was removed and the female was treated at UC Davis Medical Center. She is in stable condition, police said.

Firefighters involved in the incident are cooperating with investigators and were put on paid administrative leave, per the city's administrative policy, police said.
