A wild land fire in Amador and Calaveras counties, located east of Jackson, burned more than 4,000 acres by Thursday morning.

The fire, also known as the Butte Fire, ignited Wednesday around 2:25 p.m. near the 17700 block of Butte Mountain Road, Cal Fire said. The fire has burned 4,000 acres and is now 20% as of 6:54 a.m. Thursday.

Cal Fire confirmed six homes and two outbuildings have been destroyed in the Butte Fire as of Thursday.

Cal Fire said the fire is burning in the Mokeloumne River drainage. At some point, the blaze jumped the river and into Calaveras County. A large part of the blaze is burning in Calaveras County. Fire crews are working in very steep terrain and hot temperatures.

PG&E said Wednesday evening about 17,000 customers were without power. The utility said power could be restored by Thursday evening. Evacuations are in place for Amador Lane, Canyon View, Fig Tree Lane, Ponderosa Way, the end of Electra and Charamuga Ranch Road.

Several facilities near the Butte Fire -- Pine Grove, West Point, Jackson and other nearby areas -- were damaged. Crews have to work with Cal Fire in order to make sure the area near a damaged facility is safe before PG&E can go in and fix it.

A pyrocumulus cloud from the Butte Fire can be seen all the way in Stockton.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
