The Airport Fire forced evacuations in Orange and Riverside counties Wednesday as crews work to control the rapidly spreading blaze.
Cal Fire said the wildfire burned about 23,140 acres as of Wednesday and is 5% contained. The fire started amid an intense heatwave in Southern California.
“The cause of the fire as we announced yesterday is accidental, unintentional, by heavy equipment working in the area of the RC Airport,” Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Paul Holaday said at a news conference Tuesday.
Two firefighters who suffered heat-related injuries and a resident who suffered from smoke inhalation were treated at a hospital and released. Four other people were injured in the fire including a resident and three other firefighters though their conditions are unknown.
The fire started Monday, around 1:20 p.m. near Rose Canyon Road and Trabuco Canyon Road, according to Cal Fire.
California is only now heading into the teeth of the wildfire season but already has seen nearly three times as much acreage burn than during all of 2023.

Wildfire Preps
If you live in a wildfire-prone zone, Cal Fire suggests creating a defensible space around your home. Defensible space is an area around a building in which vegetation and other debris are completely cleared. At least 100 feet is recommended.
The Department of Homeland Security suggests assembling an emergency kit that has important documents, N95 respirator masks, and supplies to grab with you if you’re forced to leave at a moment’s notice. The agency also suggests signing up for lvocal warning system notifications and knowing your community’s evacuation plans best to prepare yourself and your family in cases of wildfires.
