Bear Fire in Sierra County: Evacuations for wildfire burning south of Loyalton

The fire is 2,000 acres and is 0% contained as of Tuesday. It's threatening the Sierra Brooks community and 536 people are under evacuation orders.

Evacuation orders and warnings are in effect for the Bear Fire burning south of Loyalton in Sierra County on Tuesday.

The U.S. Forest Service for the Tahoe National Forest said the wildfire was reported around 2 p.m. Monday off Bear Valley Road south of the Sierra Brooks community.

The fire is 2,000 acres and is 0% contained as of Tuesday. It's threatening the Sierra Brooks community and 536 people are under evacuation orders. Crews are working to defend structures in and around Sierra Brooks.

According to an outage map from Liberty Utilities, about 686 customers in Loyalton are without power.

Due to dry, windy conditions, the wildfire spread rapidly, according to the U.S. Forest Service. A Red Flag Warning over the fire area expired at 8 p.m. Monday.

Wildfire Preps

The agency also suggests signing up for local warning system notifications and knowing your community’s evacuation plans best to prepare yourself and your family in cases of wildfires.
