Caldor Fire reaches the halfway mark on containment | Evacuations, road closures and updates

The forecast calls for a fire weather watch Thursday evening through Friday evening in much of Northern California due to a chance of thunderstorms and gusts.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — Fire officials say California is on track for one of its worst fire seasons ever as hot, dry conditions across the north raise the threat of new fires or existing ones flaring into dangerous life.

Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter says the whole state is showing the potential for extreme fire danger in the next three months. Meanwhile, hotter, drier weather is forecast this week in the north.

Crews on Tuesday cut miles of new containment line around the Caldor Fire, which was 50% contained after threatening South Lake Tahoe.

According to Cal Fire's Wednesday report, the west zone of the fire continued to see active fire along the northeast and southern edge of the fire. Crews stayed busy in Kirkwood along Highway 88 to bolster control lines and keep the fire in check.

In the east zone of the fire, crews are trying to make sure there hard work will stand up to Red Flag conditions on Thursday and Friday. Firefighters are constructing containment line and mopping up nearby areas to strengthen their defenses.

Wildfire Preps

If you live in a wildfire-prone zone, Cal Fire suggests creating a defensible space around your home. Defensible space is an area around a building in which vegetation and other debris are completely cleared. At least 100 feet is recommended.
